OTHER CCS PROGRAMS
Of the total 22.5 million refugees in the world today, less than 1 percent have been resettled. Over 62 thousand refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, and elsewhere are currently stranded in Greece, living in temporary camp structures while they wait, often indefinitely, for resettlement.
CCS is responding to this humanitarian crisis by launching our first-ever direct aid program, focused entirely on hands-on service to meet the most urgent needs of vulnerable residents of refugee camps in Greece.
How can you support refugees?
The majority of refugee families in Greece now live in one of 40+ ‘temporary’ camps. The camps CCS work with are situated 50 minutes north of Athens, and each houses approximately 800 residents.
The needs the camps face are constantly in flux, and CCS is committed to flexibility in meeting the most urgent of these needs as they arise. Right now, CCS is responding to the desperate need at the Ritsona refugee camp for the management and distribution of crucial resources, such as water and clothing. CCS volunteers fill this need by funding, supplying and managing the distribution of water, milk, hygiene items, and clothing to all camp residents in a dignified, respectful, and equitable manner.
The future is uncertain for these families, and restoring dignity and purpose in their daily lives is a crucial goal of this program. Bringing a sense of normalcy and routine in a chaotic and foreign environment is so valued, needed, and appreciated by residents.
Our Refugee Support Volunteer Program is different from our other programs, in that it is our first program that is focused entirely on emergency humanitarian aid. As a humanitarian response program, our volunteer work with refugees in Greece takes precedence over the usual cultural programming. Our amazing in-country staff will still be on-hand to help you every step of the way, but the focus in Greece will be entirely on service to meet the most pressing needs of residents of refugee camps.
At the request of residents and camp actors, CCS is honored to now manage the operations of Ritsona refugee camp’s massive distribution center, a crucial dispensary of water, milk, hygiene products, clothing, and other supplies. As a volunteer, you will form lasting relationships with residents as you distribute daily water packages and run a free clothing boutique -- meeting basic human needs and fulfilling fundamental human rights, all with compassion, dignity, and humanity.
Without our volunteers and donors, the distribution center simply wouldn’t exist, and residents would not have access to resources to meet their most urgent needs and fulfill their most basic human rights. Our need for volunteers is more urgent now than ever, as we commit to the long-term operations of this distribution center. In addition, as part of your program contribution, we donate $200-300 directly to the distribution center for every 2 weeks of service.
Uphold human dignity and provide a sense of stability when you Manage Water & Clothing Distributions by meeting basic needs with consistency and respect.
Meet Other Urgent Needs in refugee camps by offering emotional and educational supports to vulnerable residents.
