Persistent inequality in India is reflected in the low human development attainments of the country’s most marginalized groups including castes, women, the transgender community, people living with HIV, migrants, and tribal and rural populations. More than 800 million of India’s 1.25 billion people live in the countryside, and a quarter of this rural population lives below the poverty line, totaling 216 million individuals. The government estimates average monthly incomes per agricultural household across the whole of India at only US $105.

Families in Dharamsala face the reality of a rural economy and the pressures that come with it. Very often education is not viewed as a way out of poverty, and children are instead encouraged to contribute to the cultivation of the family land and animals. Additionally, access to health care in rural settings can be extremely limited and under resourced.

Join CCS to volunteer in Dharamsala as we support the education of vulnerable children and girls, and deliver public health campaigns to those that lack adequate health care.

Once enrolled, you will have the chance to select the volunteer opportunity that's most interesting to you. Volunteers will always receive their first preference. The only exception to this will be when there are national or school holidays, or there are exceptional circumstances.

Child Development
CCS volunteers in Dharamsala greatly contribute to improving the quality of education that every child deserves. Women, mostly single mothers, need to work to support their family, and thus rely on community support to help with their children. Community groups and childcare centers are present to provide these essential services, but are grossly under resourced and understaffed even in formal school settings. CCS volunteers assist teachers, conduct early education programming, teach English language skills, and provide children with one-on-one attention.

Global Health
Access to high quality health care in rural areas is severely limited. Through outreach, education, and care, you will provide much-needed support to vulnerable children and adults in low-income communities. In addition, CCS leads multiple public health projects in India including vision screening for children, oral health campaigns, and the promotion of hygiene in schools.

I am passionate about giving everyone choices and resources to meet their goals in a current India that has wide economic divisions based on caste and income.

Starting at a young age, I was inspired by my mother to stand up for the oppressed and take action in my community. At 9 years old, I was involved in knitting socks and sweaters, cooking food, and collecting resources for Indian soldiers. My passions developed to a focus in girl's and women's education, whether it be teaching students to use coal to write on the floor in under resourced schools to working alongside women fighting domestic abuse.

I was fortunate to be raised in a home that valued education and was able to provide for my needs. I fight for every man, woman, and child to receive the same opportunities.
