Female Friendly Spaces in Greece
Kloey Strande spent the last 3 months with the CCS Greece refugee program, working primarily with the women of the refugee camp. Below Kloey describes her experience as a CCS volunteer:
“I volunteered with Cross Cultural Solutions for three months in Greece, helping refugees that were in the camp of Ritsona. My time there was an experience that changed my life. I was permanently placed in the Female Friendly Space, closely assisting women of various backgrounds, languages and needs. Educational courses on breastfeeding, beauty sessions, and learning more about their rights were provided. Various leveled English lessons were taught daily to women ranging in ages 13-55 years old. A sewing room was always made available for any clothing that needed to be repaired, or even created from scratch, from material that was donated. Each one of the ladies that came into FFS taught me something new, but the overall takeaway was that they were all such strong, empowered women that could get through anything, all the while being amazing role models and influencers for their children and their future. This experience has opened my eyes to what is really going on in the world, outside of the news and social media’s portrayal of the crisis. They are all like us- living their lives, providing for their families and keeping them safe, once having successful jobs and lifestyles. This experience reminded me to never take the little things for granted, to hug your loved ones tightly, and say “I love you” a little more. To really be present and grateful for where we are, and what we have- because any of that could change in a blink of an eye”
