Celebrate Shark Week like you mean it!

Happy Shark Week, everyone! For all of you adventure junkies and shark fanatics out there, I hope you are enjoying everything the Discovery Channel has to offer this week. But don't you want to take it one step further? Like that's even a question. You know you do! And what better way to really understand what this adrenaline-pumping week is all about than to sign up for a volunteer adventure with Cross-Cultural Solutions in South Africa. During the week you'll lend your passion and support to a community driven volunteer project, and during your weekend free time, you can choose to go shark cage diving in Gansbaai, AKA Shark Alley! And that's exactly what I did!

Here are my top 5 moments from my experience shark cage diving:

  1. The captain - This man had such a thick Afrikaans accent that I only understood about half of what he was saying. He was running from the front of the boat to the back shouting orders. And I very vividly remember the way he cackled hysterically every time he saw a shark. He really set the scene for an epic day!
  2. The first in - Always dive first. Just do it. You will see the most sharks and you look completely fearless when you raise your hand to volunteer. I channeled my inner Katniss and said "I volunteer!" And up to the cage I stepped.
  3. The icy water - It doesn't matter what time of year you go, the water will be freezing. The moment it hit me, my heartbeat quickened. That, or I just realized that I had jumped into the ocean just inches away from where a great white shark (or two) was about to appear.
  4. The sharks!!! - Centimeters. Centimeters away from my face! That is how close the first shark got. He came barreling through the water, teeth first, and slammed into our cage. Do you know that sharks are physically incapable of producing fat? And all of that pure muscle was on top of us. Next to us. Swimming toward us one moment, and away just as quickly the next. Until it came back. And boy did he make a second (and third, and fourth) appearance!
  5. The adrenaline - I have never had so much adrenaline pumping through my veins. I felt invincible and miniscule in the same moment. I will never forget that feeling.

So for now, continue to enjoy this awesome week-long celebration of all things shark. Wear your shark print socks, eat your shark shaped fruit snacks, and be comfortable on your couch. But next summer, trade in those socks for flippers and experience it firsthand!
