5 Ways to Fundraise: Volunteer

Volunteer Abroad Fees

You're an international volunteer with the desire to make an impact, and have a little fun along the way. You've done your research and have concluded that Cross-Cultural Solutions is the safest, most reputable organization around. So what's next? It's time to start raising funds for your big adventure. Here are a few creative ways to get started:

  1. Throw a theme night: Invite your friends and family to your place for an evening of fun and food, all organized around the culture and cuisine of your volunteer destination, and ask for a small donation at the door. Teaching English in Guatemala? Whip up some empanadas for your guests. Volunteering with families in Morocco? Put together a Moroccan inspired playlist.
Why it will work: People love a reason to get together and celebrate, even if it's for no reason at all. Plus, everyone loves snacks.

  2. Are you an artist? A chef? A photographer? Offer your skills for donation. Paint an abstract for a friend to hang on the wall of their new house. Ask your neighbors to kick you a donation for preparing them a delicious dinner at home. Have a buddy who just got engaged? Offer an exclusive photography shoot for a small donation to your volunteer trip abroad.
Why it will work: Since it's a talent you already possess, all you're spending is time!

  3. Organize a reverse raffle: Throw a fundraising event and give everyone a ticket when they arrive. So what's the prize? A pie in the face! Offer your guests a chance to buy their way out of the raffle and ditch that awful prize in exchange for a donation.
Why it will work: Who likes a pie in the face? Exactly.

  4. A good old fashioned yard sale with a twist: Ask your friends and family to clean out their attics and garages, and donate any old furniture, clothing, toys, awesome t-shirts from roadside tourist attractions, etc. and organize a neighborhood yard sale. Be sure to let folks know that all proceeds will help fund your volunteer abroad adventure.
Why it will work: There are no overhead costs for you and everyone will be happy to donate their clutter to the cause!

  5. Get silly: Flamingo a friend's lawn and ask them to donate to your cause so that you'll clear up the pink invasion. Reward them with a chance to choose who gets flamingo-ed next. Maybe you can grow out your beard and ask your network of friends and family to pay a dollar for each day you keep that face full of fur. The sillier, the better.
Why it will work: Because it's fun!

The more creativity you put into your fundraising campaign, the more likely you’ll be to get everyone in your network involved. What other awesome fundraising ideas have you tried? Let us know in the comments section below.

I did a sponsored skydive and raised about £1100 from it! Throwing yourself out of a plane has a bit of OMG factor, so people were pretty generous! I also gave out tubes of sweets and asked people to fill them with spare change. People get to eat the sweets and get rid of all the pennies lying around.

Jocelyn, What great ideas! How did you promote your skydive? Did you use social media, a letter-writing campaign or word of mouth? Or even better, all three?
