5 reasons to choose Bagamoyo

My very first volunteer experience with Cross-Cultural Solutions brought me to Bagamoyo, Tanzania. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made, so if you're thinking about embarking on an international volunteer adventure of your own, do yourself a favor and consider Bagamoyo. Here are a few reasons why:

  1. A truly rural, African experience. Bagamoyo is a gem of a fishing village on the coast of East Africa. Because it's such a warm and welcoming community, it's really incredible how quickly you become a part of things as a volunteer. My fellow volunteers and I all made fast friends with local neighbors and earned serious bonus points when we greeted our new friends with an enthusiastic jambo. It's an off-the-beaten-path community, so it remains relatively "untouched" by the usual tourist crowd that you may find in other parts of East Africa.

  2. An incredible place for culture and the arts. Bagamoyo offers a ton in the way of unique cultural experiences. It's the home of the only Arts College in Tanzania, so volunteers are constantly surrounded with opportunities to explore the local music scene, join in on an impromptu African dance performance, and scope out beautiful handmade crafts and artwork.

  3. The beach! The Home-Base is only about a 10 minute walk from the beach where volunteers can while away their free time watching fishermen as they haul in their afternoon catch from the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

  4. The big city is nearby. Bagamoyo is just an hour away from Dar Es Salaam, one of the country's largest cities. Dar's proximity makes it super easy to access all sorts of urban activities like shopping, movies, transportation to Zanzibar, or even a quick flight to Kilimanjaro.

  5. The volunteer opportunities. Even with all of the amazing activities and attractions that are completely unique to Bagamoyo, my favorite part was, of course, the amazing volunteer opportunities. There's truly an opportunity for every interest. Some volunteers teach English, nutrition, or computer skills, while others may visit the sick to offer support and basic services, or care for children.

So go ahead and reserve your space today! Between Tanzania's hakuna matata attitude, the incredible local people, and the beautiful surroundings, you really can't go wrong.

And trust me, when you come back, you'll have a one-of-a-kind story to tell that everyone will be eager to hear. After all, how many of your friends have volunteered in Bagamoyo, Tanzania?
