Volunteer Interview: Madel, Peru

I had the chance to sit down and speak with Madel Leal, an intern currently in Lima Peru. Madel is currently working on her Masters’ in Social Work with a concentration in Community Organizing and Development. Within her school, she works in the Office of Global Activities doing administrative work and web content. Additionally, she does student advising for one of the grants available through the school. Madel has been very active in the community here and her passion shows through her work. She has just completed the first 4 weeks of her 13 week internship.

My 5+ year career at CCS has taught me a lot about “being thankful.” I continue to learn to wake up every single day, with the aim to live my life with gratitude and wonder at the diversity of human experience on this planet. Currently having the opportunity to work remotely from Tanzania (Hi Mount Kilimanjaro, nice to see you this morning!) and soon en route to India, by December, I will have had the chance to experience seven out of eight CCS programs.

Over the Labor Day weekend, Cross-Cultural Solutions held our inaugural alumni weekend trip. The trip was for those who have previously been on a longer experience with CCS, and wanted to reconnect with an international community and meet other like-minded volunteers. With the recognition that many alumni don’t have the time to travel abroad for as long as they did on their initial program, CCS wants to continue to offer quick ways to increase cultural competency and make an impact with some of our partner programs.

Food for thought


Food is far more than fuel for our bodies—it reveals something significant about our cultural heritage and brings us together around the table.
