Tanzania
"My trip to Tanzania was a journey of discovery where I realized that volunteering just a little bit everyday can make a huge difference in the future. Carrying with me the greatest gift received, the gift of deep experience, I can proudly come back home and educate others about my experience in Africa!"Bill Tan, Tanzania volunteer
Why Volunteer in Kilimanjaro?
The Kilimanjaro Region is dominated both geographically and spiritually by Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the African continent. Moshi is the capital town of the Kilimanjaro Region, located at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The waterfalls, coffee plantations and banana fields create an incredible setting for the Cross-Cultural Solutions programs. The name Moshi means "smoke" in Swahili and the town earned its name when it was the routing center for trains going from Tanzania to Kenya. Though the train no longer offers that route, Moshi still attracts many visitors, who are drawn to its beauty and its relaxed spirit.
In the Spring of 2004, CCS volunteers began working in Kilimanjaro. Our year-round presence and dedication to the community's work ensures that volunteers are warmly welcomed by the schools,
women's groups, organizations working on HIV/AIDS initiatives, and other dynamic community organizations. There is a strong sense of community in this area, so placements focus on community and business development. The Chagga people in this area are well-known for their excellent skills in education, business and community development. Volunteering in the Kilimanjaro Region provides you with a unique opportunity to get to know the local people as you live and work near the base of one of the most beautiful mountains in the world.
