Why Volunteer in Rural Kilimanjaro?
Experience the world-famous Kilimanjaro region as a volunteer. Enjoy rural village life in an area that is truly untouched by tourism. As a CCS volunteer you can live and work side-by-side with the people of Boma Ng'ombe, a small village in the Hai District of Kilimanjaro.
Located between Arusha and Moshi, Hai is home to farming settlers as well as the Chagga, Maasai, and Pare peoples. While these tribes continue to honor their own unique cultures and traditions, new small businesses are sprouting up to accommodate the community's growth. As the traditional and modern worlds merge in this small village the sights and sounds of come together in a very unique way. There may be Maasai women passing by in traditional clothes transporting water on their heads; cattle slowly led up a dusty dirt road; donkeys waiting patiently outside the local market; and taxis lining up at the new hotel next door.
In May 2008, CCS welcomes the first volunteers to Rural Kilimanjaro. Volunteer placements here offer a unique opportunity to witness the growth of this traditional, tribal community. Volunteers will be working in the village itself in their local schools, women's groups, organizations working on HIV/AIDS initiatives, and other dynamic community organizations.
