India is a multidimensional country, diverse in history, religion, politics, landscape, language, and customs. As the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, and influenced by the rule of both the Mughal and British empires, India’s layered history is an integral part of what it means to be Indian. This complex cultural landscape provides visitors with an experience of incomparable historical and spiritual depth.

In recent years, economic reforms have transformed India into one of the fastest growing economies. However, low-income areas abound, and high levels of illiteracy and malnutrition continue to affect social progress. Issues like these along with the caste system — the traditional social hierarchy of Indian society — contribute to the socio-economic divide within the population. Throughout its history, India has proven to be a center of social activism, change, and resilience. Our Partner Programs in India reflect these values and strive to provide necessary services that improve the lives of community members.

New Delhi

CCS’s founding program site, New Delhi is the capital of India, and home to some of the world’s most beautiful architecture, from the Great Mosque to the Mughal Palace. The physical landscape of the city reflects both its layered history and modern life. Distinct areas of the city reflect the assimilation of different cultural influences in unique ways. However, there are dramatic differences in localities, standards of living, and adherence to traditions throughout the city. Despite the vast portion of the population living in low-income areas, residents continue to come together to provide necessary services for their communities. CCS volunteers have been serving on these community initiatives since 1995.

Set in a beautiful forest with the snow-capped Himalayan mountain range as its backdrop, Dharamsala is a popular starting point for hikers as well as visitors to the Dalai Lama, whose home is located a few miles away. The town is a unique meeting place of two ancient traditions — the local Indian community and the refugee Tibetan community.
