"Quetzaltenango is a wonderfully fascinating city, and the perfect place to have a second Home-Base because it provides volunteers the opportunity to live close to the Indian culture, as well as experience the country's natural beauty. Volunteers will be working in the city of Quetzaltenango as well as its small surrounding villages, and really enjoy a wonderful cultural exchange with the local people."

Virginia Burmester, Guatemala Country Director

Why Volunteer in Quetzaltenango?

Mountain vistas in QuetzaltenangoIn the Spring of 2007, CCS opened in Quetzaltenango, the nation's second largest city. With an altitude of 8,000 feet above sea level, Quetzaltenango has warm days, cool nights and no mosquitoes. The second largest city in Guatemala, it is known for its stunning vistas, astonishing range of landscapes, and city life. The sights and sounds of this densely-populated city contrast against the calming beauty of nearby mountains and volcanoes.

The city is a popular destination for Guatemalan nationals as well as international visitors. Walking through the cobblestone pathways, you will see colonial style buildings and markets on every corner draped with vibrantly colored weavings. The streets and plazas uniquely blend Greek columns, ancient cathedrals, and striking edifices with traditional Spanish and Mayan architecture, much of it rebuilt after a major earthquake in 1902. The architecture of this youthful, vibrant city is truly beautiful against the natural backdrop of the surrounding mountains and villages. The proximity of mountains and volcanoes provides an ideal setting for hiking and nature-lovers, while the city offers many markets, festivals, and plazas to explore.
