India

"I had a truly fantastic experience. India is an incredibly diverse and intoxicating country. Being able to volunteer with local people instilled a very strong sense of involvement within the community and a great foundation for learning about and embracing different cultural norms, beliefs and traditions."

Richard Holford, Volunteer in India

Why Volunteer in Dharamsala?

Located in the stunning Himalayas, in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamsala was founded during the time of British rule. The region gained world attention in 1959, when the Dalai Lama fled to the area and settled there. Dharamsala is set in a beautiful forestDharamsala view from CCS Home-Base with the snow-capped Himalayan mountain range as its backdrop. Dharamsala is a popular starting point for hikers as well as visitors of the Dalai Lama, whose home is located a few miles away. The town is a unique meeting place of two ancient traditions the local Indian community on one side, and the refugee Tibetan community on the other.

Volunteers in Dharamsala work closely with the Indian community, learning about the local customs Dharamsala woman and unique history of the region. The rural setting ensures that there are plenty of opportunities for volunteers to immerse themselves in the local community, as well as enjoy the beauty of the Himalayas.
