A volunteer program with Cross-Cultural Solutions is a great way to try volunteering abroad for a shorter period of time which can help give you insight into what the Peace Corps may be like and also the hands-on experience that can make you a more competitive applicant.
CCS has often been called “an alternative to the Peace Corps” for many reasons. Founded in 1995 after an inspiring time volunteering alongside a Peace Corps volunteer, CCS short-term programs have since allowed over 25,000 volunteers to serve abroad and effectively address education, healthcare, and community development needs. Learn more about similarities and differences between Peace Corps and Cross-Cultural Solutions.
The Peace Corps application process is very competitive, with over 15,000 applications received each year for approximately 4,000 volunteer positions. If your goal for your CCS program is to gain experience to become a more competitive applicant for the Peace Corps, we encourage you to volunteer abroad for the maximum length of time – three months.
Here are some ways that your CCS experience can support your Peace Corps application:
Insight into International Volunteering
When you volunteer abroad with CCS, we welcome you into our community to work on important community-led initiatives, and share important cultural perspectives to ensure your work is both effective and culturally-appropriate for the community.
No matter how long you serve, you’ll gain a strong understanding of what to expect as an international volunteer.
Related International, Cross-Cultural Experience
Experience living abroad in another culture is highly valued on a Peace Corps application as it demonstrates your interest in learning about other cultures and languages, and a flexibility to adapt to different ways of life. Volunteering abroad with CCS provides a strong emphasis on learning and also presents a commitment to service — CCS staff members educate you on local development needs so you can work side-by-side with local people, and ensure that your volunteer work helps improve the quality of life of people in underserved areas.
Practical Experience as Volunteer
Previous volunteer experience is highly valued on your Peace Corps application. In some ‘non-specialist programs’ such as health outreach or English tutoring/teaching, even 10 hours per month of experience can help you become a more competitive applicant. CCS volunteers typically serve 20 or more hours per week, and volunteers may request to volunteer additional hours.
Letters of Recommendation
Upon successful completion of the program, CCS volunteers may request a letter of recommendation from CCS staff to support their application to the Peace Corps.
