Teaching English in underserved communities can increase educational and employment prospects for people who would not normally have the opportunity to learn English. In many of the communities where we work, language barriers can make it difficult to compete for sought-after opportunities. Since these communities are often low-income, many cannot afford formal English lessons. The community learning centers and schools where CCS volunteers work offer an educational environment where people can learn English, and also be exposed to native English speakers.

Make a Difference by Improving English Skills

Both inexperienced and experienced volunteers can teach vocabulary, assist with pronunciation, and support students as they practice speaking English. These students, of all ages and backgrounds, appreciate the opportunity to interact with fluent speakers and local teachers welcome the extra assistance. Volunteers even help to bring new students to schools because the opportunity to learn English from international, fluent English speakers is unmatched elsewhere in the community, even for teachers.

Activities may include teaching English in a classroom setting, in one-on-one lessons, planning new and creative ways to get children to remember vocabulary, or reviewing an organization’s English materials for accuracy.

Examples of Volunteer Work

If you are fluent in English, you can provide a real contribution to the community and have great fun in the process:

  • Work with local tour guides to improve written and spoken English at local museums that showcase China’s rich history
  • Be a positive role model, while teaching English, at a center for at-risk teens who live near the city dump in Guatemala
  • Encourage children to learn English with games at a summer camp for orphans in Russia

You do not have to be a teacher to teach conversational English. The only requirement for this type of volunteer work is that you are fluent in English. International students learn a great deal simply from your pronunciation.

Teaching Conversational English placements are available in:

CCS volunteer placements are always designed with the community's immediate requests and needs in mind. For that reason, we cannot guarantee specific volunteer placements. For more information, read about our Placement Process.
