Volunteer at an elderly center in Lima, Peru.
Volunteer at nursing homes or senior centers and create a compassionate and nurturing atmosphere for the elderly. Even in cultures where family values are strong, older generations may find themselves separated from their families as an effect of migration, war, or other civil strife.
In the communities where we work, many elderly people are originally from low-income, underserved populations, and now that they are no longer working, their income is even more limited. They come to rely on the generosity of others and the existence of local social service organizations for their basic needs and support. Community initiatives and organizations also provide an opportunity for the elderly to receive one-on-one attention and basic healthcare, learn new skills to generate income, and socialize.
Make a Friend, Make an Impact
The senior centers offer a fun opportunity to socialize with international friends. Senior citizens are grateful for this companionship and attention provided by volunteers because it makes them feel important and special.
At nursing homes, your companionship does much more than brighten someone’s day—it contributes to their overall well-being. You friendship provides mental stimulation, and your enthusiasm energizes the body and spirit.
Examples of Volunteer Work
Volunteer work with the elderly may include various recreational activities, caregiving tasks such as preparing meals, or simply being a companion. While caring for the elderly, you can:
- Lead exercises and participate in song and dance in Lima, Peru
- Develop arts & crafts projects with the elderly in Guatemala
- Help prepare senior citizens for the Juegos Dorados—Costa Rica's national senior games.
You may be surprised at how much fun you’ll have, or how energetic senior citizens can be in competition. Simple tasks can prove so meaningful, and if you have an interest in caring for the elderly, your compassion can make a difference.
