All program participants must have a passport which is valid for six months after they plan on returning to their country of origin. However, some countries where CCS operates also require a travel visa to enter and depart, depending on your citizenship, so learn about visa requirements in advance. A travel visa is permission from the government, usually a stamp on your passport, to enter and leave the country you are visiting.
While not all countries where we operate require a travel visa, many do. This information is up-to-date as of October 1, 2008.
Brazil
To enter Brazil, U.S., Canadian, and Australian passport holders must obtain a Tourist or a Volunteer/Cultural Visa.
U.S. passport holders are charged a processing fee of approximately US$140 for a Tourist visa. Normally a Tourist visa will be issued in 2-10 business days. You may be required to apply for a Volunteer/Cultural visa depending on your state of residency. U.S. passport holders are charged a processing fee of approximately US$240 for a Volunteer/Cultural visa. Processing time for the Volunteer/Cultural visa depends on the consulate jurisdiction and may take up to several weeks.
Visas will expire if they are issued more than 90 days before your first entry into Brazil. They are generally valid for 90 days from the first entry, renewable for another period of up to 90 days by the Brazilian Federal Police.
Please be sure to contact your Program Manager before applying for your visa due to frequent changes in the application process. It is recommended that you use a visa expeditor.
Passport holders of the following countries do not need visas when entering Brazil for tourism or business purposes (up to 90 days): Andorra, Argentina, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Bermuda, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Israel, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Monaco, Morocco, Namibia, Netherlands, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Surinam, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Trinidad, Tobago, Uruguay, Vatican, and Venezuela.
China
U.S., Canadian, and European citizens need a visa to enter China. Currently, 30-day tourist visas are the standard, but 60-day and 90-day visas can be issued upon request with your initial application. When you apply for your tourist visa, ask for the longest duration that will accommodate your program. If you are doing a 6-week program, request a 60-day tourist visa. If your program is 12 weeks, please request a 90-day tourist visa. The embassy will issue you a 30-day visa by default if you don't ask. The single entry visa is only valid for 90 days from date of issue; therefore, please do not apply for your visa more than three months before your departure.
If you are issued a 30-day visa and you need a longer one, CCS can try to help you extend it while you are in Xi'an, however nothing can be guaranteed. Please also note that we can only help you extend your visa to cover the remainder of the time you will be on our program, which does not include any independent traveling you might be doing. The Chinese government may only allow you to extend your visa once, for 30 days. If you're unable to extend your visa while in Xi'an, you may have to leave China and come back after reapplying for a Chinese visa; Hong Kong will be the least expensive and most convenient destination to do this.
In order to apply for a visa, you will need a passport (must be valid for at least six months after you depart China and have at least one blank page), visa application, a passport photograph, and a fee of US$130 for U.S. citizens (US$30 for citizens of other countries). Visa applications are available for download from the Chinese Embassy's website.
