India is home to some of the world’s largest cities as well as some of the world’s most remote and isolated villages. From the deserts of Rajasthan, to the capital of New Delhi, to the Himalayas and the jungles rich in wildlife, India’s geography is as diverse as its people. As the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, and influenced by the rule of both the Mughal and British empires, India’s layered history creates a diverse cultural landscape which provides visitors with an experience of incomparable historical and spiritual depth.

Volunteer Work: Volunteer placements in Palampur are always in sustainable community development initiatives. The volunteer work on Teen Volunteer Abroad programs is always a group-based project, designed to be completed within the program dates. These projects may include teaching English and arts & crafts in a local school, or participating in recreational activities with the community. Local people often wear traditional clothing, and CCS volunteers are encouraged to do the same, especially at their placements.
Cultural & Learning Activities: These activities may include an in-depth orientation, insightful discussions with staff and local experts on cultural norms, basic Hindi language instruction, guest speakers and special events. These events may include visits to local Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist temples, yoga instruction, a hike through the mountains, or cricket lessons. Volunteers also have the opportunity to visit McCleod Ganj, the residence of the exiled Tibetan community and the Dalai Lama.
Free Time: There will be time in the afternoons and evenings to rest and relax in the CCS Home-Base with fellow teen volunteers. CCS also arranges optional, staff-accompanied activities to explore the community and culture. The groups are supported and supervised by CCS in-country staff at all times. The most common free time activities include: trips to local markets, walks around the local community, and trips to the internet café.
Home-Base in Palampur: At the Palampur Home-Base, volunteers live in a gated compound with a large house and flats on the same property. During the Teen Volunteer Abroad dates, only participating teens will occupy the Home-Base, with rooms separated by gender. Tea fields and the main market, where internet cafés and stores are located, are all a 10-minute walk away. Local cooks provide meals consisting of typical Indian cuisine including traditional tandooris, curries, masalas, and other dishes served with rice.
Transportation to and from your volunteer placement and any Cultural & Learning Activity is provided by CCS’ licensed drivers. Local CCS staff helps facilitate your volunteer experience and are always available to handle any questions that may arise. Learn more about the in-country staff in Palampur.
