Peru is full of ancient natural wonders and rich in cultural history. In recent years, the country has struggled with significant changes in its social and economic landscape due to population shifts from rural to urban areas. In the 1980s, the political terrorism of the Sendero Luminoso, or “Shining Path” which originated in the Andes, caused even more people to seek refuge elsewhere. Although 1993 is considered as the end of the movement, many local people in Peru are still struggling with the task of strengthening and rebuilding their communities.

Despite a complex history, and the reality of today’s harsh economic climate, Peruvians remain proud and inspired to improve their own lives and their families’ future. Grounded by a strong work ethic and spirit of resilience, our Partner Programs in Peru reflect a grassroots drive to provide necessary services that improve the lives of local community members. Since 1999 when we began operating in Lima, CCS staff in Peru has supported over 3,500 international volunteers who work side-by-side with local people and provide tangible support to communities.

Lima

Lima is the capital and most populated city of Peru—a cornerstone of politics, art, culture, and history. Over time, an influx of rural indigenous people has come to the capital in search of work, education, and an opportunity to improve their lives. This migration has created a city of diverse cultures in which the traditional and modern coexist. Today, millions of Lima's residents live in shantytowns that surround the city. CCS volunteers have been serving on community initiatives that provide critical services in these areas for over 10 years.
