Volunteer: Charlotte Curry
Program Site: Volta Region, Ghana
Year: 2008
Charlotte grew up with philanthropy in her blood. During her childhood, her parents always instilled the importance of giving back, so it was no surprise when Charlotte applied for a Travelocity “Travel for Good” grant.
Charlotte won the grant, and wanted to pick a place where she would never go otherwise — she applied it toward three weeks in Ghana with Cross-Cultural Solutions.
Charlotte spent her time working in an orphanage in a remote village with no formal infrastructure, but with four orphanages with 100 children each. The overwhelming need for help gave her a different point of view, yet also opened her eyes to the commonalities that all children have. These children were dying for attention and simply needed one-on-one time.
Today, Charlotte works with Big Brothers, Big Sisters and she applies what she learned in Ghana toward her day-to-day work.
