Countries in Latin America
Young Woman in Brazil

Brazil

As a CCS volunteer in Brazil, South America’s largest and most populated country, you’ll work side-by-side with local people in a vibrant, friendly, and physically stunning atmosphere. The culture and people of Brazil reflect a long history of immigration from European, African, Asian, and Arab countries mixing with indigenous groups. Brazil is a tropical paradise with beautiful beaches, the Amazon rainforest, and rich biodiversity, but is also one of the most urban and industrialized countries in Latin America, with 80 percent of its population living in cities and towns. Since 2002, over 1,500 CCS volunteers have worked on community-led initiatives in Brazil.

Costa Rica abolished its military in 1948 to work toward social improvement, a decision that made the country a progressive pillar of stability in the region. CCS has been working in Costa Rica for over seven years, building strong partnerships and supporting over 3,000 volunteers to work on dozens of sustainable community initiatives in San Carlos, Cartago, and Puriscal.

Guatemala

As a volunteer in Guatemala with CCS, you will experience one of the world's most diverse and historically-rich nations first-hand. The population includes Ladinos, or people of Spanish heritage, Mayans, and Mestizos, people who are both Ladino and Mayan. The Mayan population alone is made up of 22 different ethnicities, all with their own unique dress and language. Although present-day Guatemala is known primarily for its Mayan roots and vibrant culture, the country has many layers. CCS started accepting volunteers in Guatemala City in 2003, and expanded to open a site in Quetzaltenango in 2007.

As a CCS volunteer in Peru, you will explore the country and get to know its people first-hand. You’ll learn about how its Incan history, numerous political struggles, Catholic heritage, and the imprint of over 50 indigenous cultures create a dynamic present-day society. Volunteer in Peru to join efforts to address the social challenges facing urban and rural areas, and support people searching for better opportunities.

“One of the most memorable parts of volunteering for me was just how receptive everyone at the school was to me. They were all very interested in getting to know me, especially in the preschool. The students didn't even care that I didn't know much Spanish. They loved to try to tell me things and teach me games. The teachers and students were very understanding of the language barrier, and we all made up creative ways to communicate when we weren't understanding something.”

Lisa Eugea, Costa Rica
