As a part of the Southern region of Thailand, Trang also includes several islands of the coast. Its location once allowed Trang to be a busy port for international trade and business — ships would arrive there in the early morning, giving Trang its name as “Town of the Dawn.” Trang later became the first city in Thailand to cultivate the rubber plant, and today rubber is one of the most important commodities produced in Thailand. As a center of business, many people from other places traveled to and settled in Trang — including a large Chinese population.

Trang is very much off the beaten path, as people traveling studying abroad often choose different areas, so its economy is not based largely on tourism. However, many residents in and around Trang would like to master the English language in order to get jobs in the tourism industry, and help boost tourism to Trang which boasts the same gorgeous beaches, forests, islands, and waterfalls as other parts of the country.

Volunteer Work in Trang

Volunteer placements in Trang are very often based at one of the Trang municipality's outstanding development initiatives. The local people truly enjoy the unique perspectives, energy, and enthusiasm that volunteers bring to the community and value the opportunity to make new friends from other cultures. Volunteer work in Trang supports the community's needs in several ways at organizations such as:

  • Caregiving : Volunteers care for children within day care centers, care for and develop activities for the elderly, and care for persons living with mental or physical disabilities. Disabilities still carry a stigma in Trang, so many people and children living with disabilities may not be properly cared for, or could be neglected altogether. Volunteers provide one-on-one attention and love that helps to build self-esteem and confidence at these local organizations.
  • Teaching : Learning English is very important to Trang residents of all ages, because the ability to communicate in English is helpful to get better jobs, including those in the tourism industry. And, learning English from a native speaker is an invaluable opportunity. Volunteers can teach or co-teach English and other subjects to students of all levels; teach conversational English outside of classrooms; train English teachers; host special programs to enhance English speaking skills; or assist teachers with lesson plans and daily activities.

Volunteer Abroad programs are offered in Trang. Placements are always designed to match your skills and interests to the needs identified by the community.

“Thailand has done more for me than I ever thought possible. The Cross-Cultural Solutions Trang program has allowed me to open my eyes to a world I never knew existed, and I am now a stronger person because of it, both inside and out. I have also decided what I'm going to do when I graduate.... I'm going to become a teacher.”
