The town of Robertson, a 90-minute drive from Cape Town, is surrounded by some of the world’s best vineyards. South Africa’s history of social inequality has created great divides between farm owners and farm workers within this region. Formerly, many vineyards would pay their workers in a daily allotment of alcohol instead of money, called the “DOP system.” This illegal practice has contributed to today’s high rates of alcoholism, fetal alcohol syndrome, and domestic abuse in the area. With more recent patterns of migrants traveling in to seek work at local farms and fruit canning factories, the community and culture is quickly changing. The constant fluctuation in this community has added strain to the area’s resources and increased competition for housing, education, and jobs. As much of this work is seasonal, unemployment in the community is exceptionally high during certain times of the year.

Volunteer Work in Robertson

In Robertson, and the surrounding townships and villages, there are many different volunteer opportunities. Placements include those with a regional focus, such as farm schools for the children of farm workers, or day cares and schools in township areas where children may have developmental delays due to a history of alcohol and other forms of abuse in the family. Volunteer work could also include placements with a continental focus, where volunteers may work in support centers for families affected by HIV/AIDS, among others.

  • Caregiving : Volunteers can care for children in daycare centers, assisting caregivers with the daily routine and providing extra support for the children. Volunteers also have the opportunity to care for people with disabilities where they’ll be able to provide individualized attention and stimulation.
  • Teaching : Volunteers support teachers and lead their own lessons in local farm schools for children of farm workers, and in primary and high schools in the townships around Robertson. Volunteers work closely with the students to teach English, songs and games, as well as specialized topics, such as basic computer skills and or math.
  • Healthcare : Volunteers have the opportunity to shadow doctors at the local hospital in Robertson as well as provide administrative or project assistance to the nursing staff. Volunteers can work with people affected by HIV/AIDS through providing companionship and care in a residential care facility, or assist in hospice care centers. Volunteers work may include a wide range of activities, such as assisting home-based community care givers in their daily household visits to patients in the surrounding disadvantaged communities.

Volunteer Abroad and Intern Abroad programs are offered in Robertson. Placements are always designed to match your skills and interests to the needs identified by the community.

“We would strongly recommend this experience. Not only do you see how other people live, but in the process you feel as though you have done something worthwhile while feeling you have benefited equally from the experience. We would advise our friends to be open to new things, interact as much as possible with the locals, and always have a smile on your face.”

Chris and Nicholas, Age 16
