With almost 2 million residents, Rabat is the second-largest city in Morocco, and has served as the capital since 1912. The official home of the King, Rabat houses all Moroccan ministries and governmental bodies and is the country’s center of international affairs. The city is also considered to be one of the most progressive and relaxed in the country. Moroccan residents often travel to Rabat to find employment, receive social services, or attend University. This mix creates an eclectic, cosmopolitan atmosphere with a Mediterranean feel that displays the beauty of Arabic and Islamic architecture alongside uniquely French distinctions.

Many of the social issues of Morocco are magnified in the large city of Rabat. As it is illegal to have children out of wedlock, many children may end up in orphanages, or fending for themselves on the street. While unemployment continues to be a national problem, it can reach up to 20 percent in urban areas where even more people are trying to find work.

Volunteer Work in Rabat

CCS volunteers in Morocco work side-by-side with local people, contributing directly to community-based projects. In Morocco, the opportunity to exchange cultures and perspectives is one of the most important parts of our volunteers' work.

  • Caregiving : Volunteers can care for infants and children, or people with disabilities in Rabat. Because of the large number of street children, one of the most common placements for volunteers is an orphanage that caters to these at-risk youth. Volunteers can also care for children and adults with disabilities by planning recreational activities and serving as a companion.
  • Teaching : In Morocco, the national literacy rate remains below 70 percent, and high dropout and repetition rates persist. Volunteers help to encourage a love of learning amongst all age groups. Volunteers can aid teachers in an organization designed specifically for educating street children so that they can be re-integrated into local schools, and have positive role models. Volunteers also assist teachers of special education in an organization that strives to combat the social stigmas that surround disabilities in Morocco.
  • Community Development : Volunteers can work toward women’s empowerment by engaging in cultural exchange and helping to teach conversational English to professional women seeking to learn new job skills and increase career prospects. French-speaking volunteers may also have the opportunity to teach other useful subjects to the women, including basic office and computer skills.
  • Healthcare : Volunteers can observe and assist healthcare professionals in Rabat at a children’s hospital where they help to care for the children by engaging in play therapy, creating arts & crafts, and reducing the overall anxiety of hospital visits. Volunteers also play an important role for the children’s families by providing moral support and a reassuring presence. Volunteers may be able to help provide physical therapy for people with physical, mental, and developmental disabilities.

Volunteer Abroad, Intern Abroad, and Insight Abroad (one week) programs are available in Rabat. Placements are always designed to match the skills and interests of our participants to the needs identified by the community.

“My experience was incredible. I had no idea that in one week I could fall in love with a place and the people there. I learned so much about the world and myself.”
