Ghana

As a volunteer in Ghana with CCS, you will gain unparalleled access to a country rich with the traditions of West African culture and diverse in population and landscape. Once a main port within the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, Ghana has a complex history. Today, Ghana is gaining a new reputation for its commitment to peace, democracy, and friendship.

While the official language of Ghana is English, more than 70 different languages are spoken. The clan and tribal systems are an important part of the culture in Ghana, and many traditional chiefs operate parallel to the freely elected governmental body, the District Assembly.

Morocco

Volunteer in Morocco with CCS, and learn about a very different side of Africa. Though this beautiful North African country is home to the Sahara Desert, it also boasts grassy coastal plains and majestic mountainous regions. Bordering the Mediterranean Sea, the Kingdom of Morocco is heavily influenced by its European neighbors and its position at the crossroads of several worlds — Arab, African, and Mediterranean. As a result, the people of Morocco embrace many different ethnic backgrounds. Morocco’s official language is Arabic, however French is also widely spoken, and considered the language of business.

South Africa

South Africa provides volunteers with a unique opportunity to experience the culture and beauty of one of the most diverse nations in the world from the inside out. After a history of colonization and slavery, 50 years of apartheid, and generations of immigration from many countries, today's South Africans embrace people of European, Asian, African, and indigenous descent. The country now has 11 official languages, and is often described as a “melting pot” of cultures. However, the legacy of apartheid and its inequities continue to shape the current social landscape and culture. In addition, the socio-economic impacts of unemployment and HIV/AIDS add to South Africa’s complexity.

Since operations began in 2003, over 2,000 CCS volunteers in Tanzania have supported under-resourced, community-led initiatives providing education, health, and social services to its residents. Tanzania receives the largest number of CCS volunteers each year.

“This experience completely exceeded all my expectations. I was amazed at how friendly and welcoming the people of Tanzania were to us. They were happy to see us and share stories with us and interested to learn about our culture, too. The other volunteers were also great. It was valuable as a cultural, professional and personal experience. It has opened my eyes to new possibilities and opened my mind to new cultures. I will never forget Tanzania or the people there and I can't wait to do another CCS program.”
